What is going on with the “suspension by pogo stick” Mustangs? Hopping on and off a wheel and seemingly causing the drivers a lot more trouble than last years cars.
These cars get a lot of development nowadays so it seems like they were set up like this for a reason, but it doesn’t seem to work in competition. Plus in a sport that’s style based, it makes the cars look really comical and strange. Particularly Gittin Jrs car which looks softer than the others.

I would assume it’s to put more weight on the wheels that are going to have the most grip. The back end squats like other rear wheel drive race cars and if you look at other cars, they’re pretty much dragging the inside wheel anyway so putting it in the air isn’t a big loss.

An acquaintance told me that they change the front suspension geometry (I think he said something about the lower wishbone) for drifting to increase the steer angle. That supposedly messes up the geometry and causes the weird hopping and dangling in the air.
I don’t know how much of this is true.

With drifting, you want the front to have more grip, so you can control the drift.

Drift cars often rear up onto 3 wheels but the 2018 Mustangs seem to bounce on and off constantly and unsettle the car. Very odd.

It’s true that drift cars often 3 wheel, but usually in a much more stable way than these new crowd killers

You’d think if they were re-engineering the suspension geometry they’d move the mounting points up to make the car look low. Also they widebody it but the front wheels still don’t fit, I know the track width is for tons of angle but if your already doing custom fenders why not make it For?
I’m not sure about drifting as a sport, the same way I don’t see salsa dancing as a sport. It can be made competitive but that’s not the spirit.

They can’t actually move the mounting points, the rules make you keep them stock.
Plenty of judged sports exist, so this isn’t really too out of the ordinary.
